I should also add that I really like your site, I came across it whilst looking for inspiration for a redesign of my own site. Looks fantastic on my 24″ iMac at home! Nice clean interface and great use of simple spot colour, also loving the simple yet effective use of jQuery to animate your banner div. Nice work!

I agree with you on the Page Fold. I don't want to see everything above the fold, but I do want to see the goals of the site consider when designing above the fold. Funny enough I already commented on the lifebelow600 thread: http://iampaddy.com/lifebelow600/#comment-32324971 see if we agree

I'm mixed on the mobile, we have a version of this site ready for mobile that we have not turned on yet. I do think there are many cases where a mobile versions should be served up if that user agent is detected but like ours include a link to the standard site. I think that is a good balance, because you are right there are larger screen devices coming out like the iPad but I still think small form factors will dominated the mobile space. So those on the go people in most cases will be looking for specific data, the easier you can serve the better.

Good post (and great site, I love the use of jQuery!) but... I don't fully agree with the "Page Fold" and "Mobile Version" paragraphs.

I don't think page fold should be stressed (as in putting EVERYTHING above the fold) as much as it is. Now as you referenced an oversized marketing header not being a great idea, I totally agree. Check out this article: http://iampaddy.com/lifebelow600/

Now, the Mobile Version I think is a big no-no. Mobile web browsers like Mobile Safari are bringing a full internet experience to people and I don't believe that experience should be disturbed with having a "Mobile Verison" of your site. Especially is true with devices like the iPad coming out.

It is a funny thing you mentioned that, we tried to figure out a way to fade the sides properly but it is not as simple as using png because the image as png was coming out to some around 3MB but we changed it a little bit to cover the really large monitors. We still need to do the inner pages but the main banner should be covered now.
